The Miss America, Miss Virginia and Miss Hampton Roads Pageants have established the following mission statement. The Miss Hampton Roads Scholarship Program, Inc. is a part of the Miss Virginia and Miss America Organizations, which are non-profit corporations. The first Miss America Pageant was held in 1921 and in 1945 the scholarship foundation was established. Today, more than $45 million in scholarship assistance is available annually to young women who participate in the Miss America program. We support education, advocate community service, and provide young women with a forum in which to express their talents, intelligence and opinions in culture, politics, platforms, and the community. The mission is:
· To provide unique opportunities for young American women to win scholarship awards as a resource to achieve their educational goals;
· To create and maintain a system of competition which enhances career opportunities and to produce role models representing positive wholesome American values;
· To extend scholarship benefits to women who choose to compete for the job of Miss Virginia;
· To utilize the Miss Hampton Roads Scholarship Program, Inc. to promote issues of concern to Virginia’s women (ages 17-24), and to encourage and promote the role of women in all aspects of our society;
· To recognize women who have made outstanding contributions in all fields of endeavor and specifically to women’s issues, and
· To encourage the spirit of volunteerism, promote goodwill, and civic and an economic benefit throughout Miss Virginia’s local and state network.
